Malmö is a story of a couple in that quintessentially Australian condition: the home renovation. We are invited into their world; we laugh and join their conceit. But things are not as they first seem. This couple is, perhaps, hell-bent towards aspirational ruin.

Segueing between dance, text and striking visual imagery, Malmö challenges the performer-audience contract in a surprising physical and emotional journey described as Dogville meets The Block.

Unsettling, absurdly funny and profound, Malmö is a cliché-bending exploration of the commercialisation of modern nesting.

The Dead Ones
Presented by Margie Fischer in association with Vitalstatistix

The Dead Ones explores death, memory, family, effects of the Holocaust and the power of objects through storytelling and photography.

Fischer’s parents were Austrian Jews who fled from Vienna to China to escape the Holocaust. After 10 years in Shanghai they came to Australia as refugees.

Margie lived with her extended family in the house her father built in Sydney. Her grandparents died there, so did her brother. When both her parents also died Margie was left to clear out the house.

While doing this she became fascinated with what is left when loved ones die. Throughout this time she documented her feelings and the processes involved. The Dead Ones explores her family stories through the objects left behind.

This solo performance is the first created by Margie Fischer since her critically acclaimed award-winning show The Gay Divorcee.

Cutaway is a three year project interdisciplinary arts project from 2011 to 2013, about the Waterside Workers Hall, an iconic, heritage listed building in Port Adelaide. Site-specific art works, made within and around Waterside by artists and community makers, will reveal and honour the extraordinary memories that inhabit the hall. Waterside, originally built by the Waterside Workers Federation in 1926 and Vitals’ home since 1992, has been central to Port Adelaide’s cultural life for eighty five years.

The Cutaway installation is our first public exhibition of work. Each artist is responding to the resonance of Waterside, working with community members, other artists and alone to make art works from song and sound, text, projection, sculpture, still image, film and live performance. It’s a beautiful, eclectic and unfinished exploration of the hall and the people who have occupied it.

Each Friday and Sunday, Live Cuts is a chance to see live elements of the installation, connect with the Cutaway project and make your own contribution to this celebration of Waterside Workers Hall.

Creative team: Annalise Rees, Cindi Drennan, Emma Webb, Gaelle Mellis, Heidi Angove, Janine Peacock, Jason Sweeney, Maude Davey, and Sasha Grbich.

After a massive start to the year (Stories of Love & Hate, A Comedy, BossLady, transumer: deviate from the norm and Adhocracy 2011) Vitals is getting ready for the second half of 2011.

Join a winter tradition by coming along to the Vitals Book, Zine and Crafty Affair on Sunday July 10. This is our annual fundraiser – so, the more books we sell, the more theatre we can present and artists we can support!

We are so looking forward to presenting Pie, a puppetry work for adults by Gabrielle Griffin. Pie premiere’s at Waterside from July 27 – see here for all the details. Pie has been developed over several years following an Incubator residency with Vitals in 2009.

Then in October Vitals presents Cutaway from October 7 – see here for all the details. Cutaway is a three year, site-specific project about our home Waterside Workers Hall.

In November Gaelle Mellis and her team will undertake another creative development of Take Up Thy Bed and Walk, our 2011 Incubator residents. Read about this new work here.

Vitals will not be doing a public call for the 2012 Incubator residencies. We look forward to announcing the two projects we have selected for Incubator very shortly.

Get ready to fcuk things up and reimagine Port Adelaide, as you take to the streets clutching self assembled deviation kits, absurd weaponry, a slippery identity and armed with a customised i-torch.

transumer: deviate from the norm is a darkly playful site-based intervention, inviting audiences to undertake tiny acts of resistance against their built environment. A joyful, deviant, profound experience, intent on unhinging our beliefs about what cities bring to our daily lives and how we can subvert the official narratives of place.

This is a new manifestation of a body of work by pvi collective, first commissioned for the 17th Biennale of Sydney in 2010, and has been made in the ‘awaiting development’ landscape of Port Adelaide with a team of local artists.

A CALL OUT TO ARTISTS: SEEKING PROPOSALS FOR ADHOCRACY

Adhocracy is a new annual make ‘n’ show hothouse for artists, activists, culture-jammers and voyeurs, presented by Vitalstatistix, over the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend, June 11-13. Adhocracy invites interdisciplinary artists to converse, create and critique in one space over three days.

We are seeking proposals from artists and creative teams for mini-projects - interdisciplinary arts projects that can develop over the course of Adhocracy. Proposals must come from creative teams (or solo artists if your project is a solo endeavor) that have an idea and want to work together on it. Small grants will be provided to successful applicants to undertake their mini-project, and you will be submersed in an adventurous, messy, experimental experience.

A Comedy by Brown Council opens tonight at the Queen's Theatre. The beautiful heritage listed venue has been transformed into a spectacular vision with a custom built, tiled bar, and industrial chandelier designed by Maddog Delaney. It includes retro couches and tables for chilling out and enjoying a drink while basking in the glow of the festoon lighting and admiring the stone walls and exposed beams of the Queen's Theatre.

A Comedy plays four times tonight at 7pm, 8pm, 9pm & 10pm. It is an endurance spectacular and audiences are invited to see just one show, or, for the brave, stay for all four shows. Or stay for two, have a break and a drink at the bar and see the last show. Warning - it WILL intensify over the course of evening. Can you handle it?

In the lead up to opening night, Brown Council have been busy rehearsing and doing interviews and TAKING THEIR BRAS OFF IN RUNDLE MALL. You know, just the usual stuff. Yesterday, the Brown Council ladies took to the Fringe Caravan stage in the mall and amused/mystified spectators by removing their bras and burning them to the soundtrack of Single Ladies, by Beyonce.

If you missed out, you can catch them at the Fringe Caravan, Rundle Mall, next Wednesday, March 9 at 4:55pm... who knows what they'll do next?

Brown Council are back, and they’re revealing the dark side of comedy with their latest endurance spectacular, A Comedy. Since winning the 2009 Adelaide Fringe Award for Best Theatre Production for their quirky and macabre take on speed dating, Six Minute Soul Mate, these Sydney artists have been shining a spotlight on what makes us laugh. And the answer is not always funny.

Brown Council is a four piece Australian video/performance art collaboration consisting of: Frances Barrett, Kate Blackmore, Kelly Doley and Diana Smith, who explore the intersections between performance art and theatre. Brown Council reclaim, embody and tear-apart images, sounds and actions from visual and popular culture. Are those dunces’ caps or the more sinister hoods we are familiar with from the pictures of tortured Abu Grahib prisoners? Their video installations and live performances have featured in festivals, exhibitions and events throughout the world.

Brown Council’s A Comedy pushes the threshold between entertainment and provocation, beginning like a late night variety show and escalating into the realm of violence, mortification and impossible conquests. Audiences will laugh, groan, and, long after they’ve left the theatre, question why they laughed at all.

The work premiered at Melbourne’s Next Wave festival in 2010, supported by Vitalstatistix’s annual residency program Incubator. After further development it showed in Sydney at Performance Space’s fast and furious festival of new ideas, Liveworks. Both times, A Comedy provoked polarising reactions, from walk outs to gross outs, laughter to horror. It was described as “critically insightful…a highlight of the festival” when it played at Liveworks, and inspired one reviewer to ask “are we horrible people?” of herself and her fellow audience members. A Melbourne audience member was overheard to say “I couldn’t watch but I couldn’t look away.”

In this endurance work, audiences can stay for an hour or stay for the full catastrophe. With four shows repeated back-to-back each night, Brown Council build a highly charged experience challenging the limits of an audience, themselves and the genre of comedy itself. As an audience member, embracing your complicity will influence your own and others experience of the performance. Add a dark and cheesy soundtrack, some all too familiar stand-up routines inside a well-loved heritage venue (Queen’s Theatre) and you have will have yourself the Fringe experience of a lifetime, replete with a funky lounge bar hosted by performer, Jo Zealand.

Part lecture, part performance, director Roslyn Oades revisits the making of Stories of Love & Hate, a unique headphone-verbatim performance based on a two-year interview process with people directly affected by the infamous December 2005 Cronulla Riots. Produced by Urban Theatre Projects (NSW) in 2008 and touring again in 2011, Stories of Love & Hate considers the idea of hate as a consequence of feeling the things we love are under threat. The result is a collection of interlinking personal stories told with affection, integrity and humour.

This presentation explores how and why theatre-makers represent real Australian stories. Roslyn will be joined by three of the original cast members, Mohammed Ahmed, Roderick Byrnes and Katia Molino, who will perform several excerpts from the show. An informative, inspiring night for anyone interested in theatre, culture or politics; and an alternative way to mark Australia/Survival Day without the flag waving.

Headphone-verbatim theatre workshop with Roslyn Oades
A one day workshop with Roslyn Oades - theatre-maker, voice artist and director of headphone-verbatim works Fast Cars and Tractor Engines (2005) and Stories of Love and Hate (2008).

Roslyn utilises an unusual verbatim technique she refers to as headphone-verbatim or audio-scripting, featuring the faithful reproduction of speech patterns. Actors literally adopt the actual words, breaths and speech mannerism of another human being with the aim of preserving the vocal print of a recorded interview. Headphone-verbatim also offers theatre-makers a paperless form of writing, constructing a performance script entirely via a process of sound editing.

A unique, rare opportunity, designed for performers and devisors, this practical workshop will offer participants the opportunity to explore and experiment with the possibilities of this exciting form on the floor including performing a pre-prepared audio-script.

Rockin’ the Boat is an eclectic night of stories and songs – from Brecht to Guys and Dolls, Nick Cave to Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell to John Lennon – in a celebration and protest inspired by the independent spirit of Port communities. Rockin’ the Boat evokes the culture and folklore common to many port cities - internationalism, peace, rebellion, love lost and found, storytelling, rat-baggery, drama and a steadfast self-determination.

Rockin’ the Boat is partly a response to the multi-million dollar Port Waterfront Redevelopment which will significantly change the built, natural and cultural landscape of the Port over the next fifteen years. In the face of many examples of more appropriate development models of ports around Australia and the world, the New Port Quays development, managed by the government’s Land Management Corporation, has seen things such as: the destruction of 150+year old working boat sheds; closure of access to much of the inner harbor of the Port River; handing over of heritage listed iconic buildings such as Harts Mill to developers for private use within the waterfront redevelopment; and contaminated dust piles left to waft across the local primary school from the one of the development sites.

The high-calibre artistic team includes such local favourites as Eileen Darley, Heather Frahn and Stephen Sheehan, with a host of Adelaide’s best instrumentalists including guest pianist Michael Morley who combine with the 35 voices of Port Adelaide’s choir, Born on Monday.

It’s your favourite pair of jeans, but after they’ve been lost, shoved guiltily down the back of someone else’s couch. It’s that denim jacket that fell off its hanger and balled up at the bottom of your wardrobe. It’s those platform shoes you coveted at Vinnies, but never quite understood what they’d go with. A little bit wrong, a little bit dirty, but completely amazing at the same time. Just make sure to shake it out before you wear it; an electro-pop cabaret comedy duo, a mu-mu wearing granny and a 3 piece indie-pop band might have taken up residence in the folds of your denim…

Cream Your Denim is a 12 hour club-night for the ladeez and their peeps, serving up music from DJs and local musos, cabaret and comedy. Waterside Workers Hall in Port Adelaide will be pumping; filled with people who aren’t easily offended, waiting for the unpredictable results of throwing these acts together for a one night only queer extravaganza as part of Feast Festival.

Expect to be offered a hair cut by our pop-up art hairdresser complete with glamorous assistant (we’re sure your hair is really lovely as it is, but maybe it’s time for a change?), and why not then take part in the denim parade – cameltoes and stonewash are never out of fashion; if you can prove it, you are invited to wear it with pride and you could win a prize. Steamy songstress, Libby O’Donovan will commentate the dirty denim cat-walking and sing some sultry numbers to get you in the parading mood. Add a flowing bar with awesome drink specials and you’ve got yourself a pretty creamy party.

Missing Supergirl

Selina Jenkins (MLB) is a name well-known to Adelaide’s cabaret and music audiences. She’s played the Adelaide Fringe, Feast and La Boheme as her alter ego, Beau Heartbreaker, and wowed the punters at Feast’s Genderf*ck Ball and Picnic in the Park with her Britney Spears tribute band, Toxic. This year, she launched her new indie pop band, Missing Supergirl, who’ve been playing to happy, foot tapping houses all over Melbourne. Vitals is pleased to present Missing Supergirl in their debut Adelaide gig. With a “voice that will leave you breathless”, Selina’s hot new three-piece will be sure to make discerning ears happy.

The Bad Father

The Bad Father (MLB) are so wrong, they’re right. The Advertiser labeled them “Idiotic. Offensive. Unacceptable.” This electro-trash satirist duo, originally from Adelaide, robot dance their way into hearts with their unique blend of dark wit, outrageous silliness and infectious pop. They have toured festivals across Australia including Midsumma, Melbourne Fringe and TasPride, culminating in a nomination for Best Cabaret Ensemble in the 2009 Green Room Awards and an appearance one of Australia’s most watched shows, ABC TV’s Spicks and Specks (watch their appearance here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNiO_2MVk4A)

Granny Flaps

This mu-mu wearing ukulele lady will warm hearts with her unique versions of well known songs about battery operated devices, childbirth and much more. Audiences are warned: don’t sing along, even if you know the words. Not for the easily offended, this local act won the 2010 Adelaide Fringe Award for Best Emerging Comedian and has recently returned from a national tour with Puppetry of the Penis.
